What is the best way to sell my home-made soy candles?

Posted by admin on July 14th, 2010 and filed under soy candle | 7 Comments »

My favorite stress relief is making home-made soy candles. Currently I have more than I can gift away or even burn for myself. I was wondering if anybody has any good ways of selling them.

Another place you may want to try is etsy.com. It’s an online community of craftspersons selling their hand-made wares. It may not get as much traffic as eBay, but the clientele are more willing to pay fairly for your hard work.

Look for SOY CANDLE Advice?

Posted by admin on July 8th, 2010 and filed under soy candle | 1 Comment »

I am looking to start making my own Soy candles. I have gotten some "Starter" kits, and they are helpful, but I am still looking for a good book to help me along the way. Does anyone have any advice and can you point me in the direction of a good book?

This book would probably be the best on soy candles: How To Make Soy Wax Candles by Quick Easy Guides

But these two also offer recipes and instructions for soy based candles: The Candlemaker’s Companion: A Complete Guide to Rolling, Pouring, Dipping, and Decorating Your Own Candles by Betty Oppenheimer and Candlemaking for Fun & Profit by Michelle Espino

Good sites for instructions:

You may want to check this out, but I’m a little leery of it:

Hi,
I live in south Alabama and work in North Florida. I am looking for someone in my area to make scented soy candles for me in bulk that I can attach my own labels to. I could save on the shipping by picking them up instead of having them shipped. Please leave info on how to contact you in your answer or email me at sglandingham@yahoo.com
Thanks!

How do you create soy candles without pockets of air forming in the candle?

Posted by admin on July 3rd, 2010 and filed under soy candle | 3 Comments »

I’m making soy candles for the first time. I made two 18 oz. candles last night from soy wax, with dye and scented oil. The oil is soy based. After they dried, there was a hole to the side of the wick on both of them. When lit, they would burn normally for a bit and then a large pocket (hole in the candle) would be exposed and the wick was sticking up through the center with no wax surrounding it for about two inches in the center of the candle. What am I doing that caused these pockets of air in the wax?? How do I make the wax form solidly??
I’ll try tapping the jar next time… (I use jars, not molds). Hopefully that will work. But I’ve made soy candles (only two) in the past and didn’t have this problem…. I suppose it could be the jar or the brand of wax though. I thought somebody out there might be familiar with this issue….
Are coated wicks bad with soy wax?

It is just a normal process. Are you pouring the wax to hot? It should be poured no hotter than 155 degrees. When you are pouring the wax pour slowly to decrease the amount of air that gets in the wax. Tapping the jar also helps. If all else fails after you have filled your jars leave a little room for a second pour this will cover up any holes that appear. The best thing to do is when your wax starts to harden poke relief holes as close to the wick as you can without hitting the wick. This releases any air pockets that form and then do a second pour to fill the relief holes and it makes the tops even. Thats the easiest way to make the tops smooth.

What type candle do you buy? Soy candle or normal candle?

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2010 and filed under soy candle | 2 Comments »

because i m going to start my home business making candles but i m not sure what type of wax i should use??

There are other vegetable-based waxes in addition to soy that you could use. I would definitely go with a plant-based waxes that are made from renewable resources.instead of paraffin which is a petroleum based product.
